Doctoral Research in Art Edited by David Forrest Australian Scholarly Publishing, Melbourne 2017 ISBN 978-1-925588-70-5 Contributors: Colleen Boyle, Jazmina Cininas, Rhett D’Costa, Lesley Duxbury, Phil Edwards, David Forrest, Julian Goddard, Paul Gough, Michael Graeve, Ian Haig, Shane Hulbert, Richard Harding, Ruth Johnstone, Robin Kingston, Laresa Kosloff, Keely Macarow, Maggie McCormick, Grace McQuilton, Sally Mannall, Nikos Pantazopoulos, David Thomas and Darrin Verhagen. Doctoral Research in Art contributes to knowledge on doctoral research approaches in the field of art with commentary and reflection by university educators and practitioners in art. The aim of the book is to assist future doctoral candidates or those considering art research at the highest level. Key questions: Why one should undertake a doctorate, and in particular, why do a doctorate in art? Through my chapter Revisiting Research (pp. 132-140) I reflect on how I managed my research for my PhD entitled Revisiting the Print Room. The chapter offers methods for handling the complexities of historical research and the management and engagement required to achieve a doctorate in art and how this new knowledge was received by peer review and post-doctoral publications. The first section of text includes details of the doctoral research to provide a context for discussion and the second section is devoted to considering motivation, choice of institution and the process of developing a research proposal and how the research proceeded, noting external impacts, with final advice to those who are considering undertaking doctoral art research.
